Walking into a new church is a daunting task…
Having some idea of what to expect can be a helpful first step. At Grace Church, we use three ideas to help set reasonable expectations.
The first idea is hospitality.
Being hospitable means that you can come as you are. There’s no dress code at Grace Church. Once you arrive, we want to greet you, and point you in the right direction. We enjoy good coffee here at Grace, and we use real coffee cups, as a means of being hospitable. Our bulletin will give you a roadmap for what we’re doing each week as we gather together. The bulletin is indeed your friend as we read, pray, sing, and hear the Word of God read and preached. We want you to feel welcome.
The second idea is that of a banquet hall.
This idea needs a bit of an explanation. At a banquet, folks are strongly encouraged to take part. To enjoy a banquet, you must eat the food – you must participate. The same is true of our time of corporate gathering. Our “liturgy” (liturgy literally means “the work of the people”) is there for you to participate. The music we sing is chosen, in part, because it’s easy for God’s people to sing together. We read, sing, pray, confess, hear God’s Word, and come to the Lord’s Table as means of participation. You’re not a spectator, you’re a participant.
Third, and finally, the ordinary means
of grace frames our time together. .
Each Sunday, we want to focus on the things that Christ has promised to use to communicate his redemption to us: namely, prayer, the Word of God, and the sacraments. Each and every week, we come before the Lord in prayer, including adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. We hear the Word of God read, and preached. We come to the Lord’s Table. On occasion, we baptize covenant children, and new believers. We stick to these things as a matter of principle, and we trust that God will use them in the lives of his people.
We’re glad you’re considering visiting Grace Church, and pray that this helps you overcome the daunting notion of trying out a new place.
